Manouso Manos

When I was in SF, I visited the Asian Art Museum where there was a huge display of ancient yoga artifacts. My most senior teacher, Manouso Manos (whose workshop I was attending in SF), was asked to give a speech on Sunday, March 9, the day after I left SF.

Manouso has practiced Iyengar Yoga for over 40 years, and is one of only two teachers granted the highest level of Iyengar Yoga Certification in the world from BKS Iyengar.

If you’re interested in hearing the talk by Manouso “Journey of Self with Yoga Master BKS Iyengar,” click on the YouTube link below. This video is about an hour.

Tomorrow – Videos of grandkids!

I wasn’t the only tired one …

In the picture below, Manouso rests after a long day of teacher intensive, and prior to teaching his evening class. He’s in a form of Savasana (Corpse Pose) on three thick pads where helpers put bolsters and heavy weights on his legs, and weights also on his shoulders and hands. This is a very grounding and calming pose. He stayed here for about 30 minutes prior to teaching the Thursday evening class, which, lucky for us, was restorative!

The Abode of Iyengar Yoga – San Francisco

Above – another photo of Alo taken from Akuch’s FB (6 months old)!!

Below are some pictures of the interior of the yoga studio where I’m doing my training – people setting up for lecture.

Although yesterday was a “short” day, I didn’t do anything exciting. Recovering and resting is important here. Tomorrow we’re done at 10:30. That’ll be the end of the workshop, and I plan on “living it up” by going to the Asian Art Museum where there’s a collection of Indian Yoga artifacts. If you’d like a preview, look here:

Where’s Chere???

Dear Blog,

I’m sorry, I haven’t forgotten you. Sometimes life gets in the way of normal everyday activities… such as blogging – a good lesson about letting go, taking care of responsibilities and detachment.

I spent the last couple days in a philosophy/asana workshop conducted by my teacher and an expert on the Yoga Sutras. It was an amazing workshop, and I feel so blessed to have come into this practice of self discipline.

The workshop was held at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of La Mesa, and Patanjali was dressed & blessed with garlands for the occasion.

In the picture below from right to left (yes, that’s backwards) is Gitte Bechsgaard (Yoga Sutras expert from Toronto), Rita (an Ayurvedic expert from SF), Gloria Goldberg (my teacher who is a highly acclaimed Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher) and on the very left is Robin (Gitte’s assistant).

Incredible people!

I had a great class this morning teaching my wonderful students and am now heading out the door for a pedicure. It’s a great life.

Nati’s at 11:30 tomorrow anyone?

BKS Iyengar 2 days ago

This picture of 95 year old BKS Iyengar (aka Guruji) taken two days ago in Pune.

It’s my understanding he can still hold a 30 minute Sirsasana (headstand). Impressive!

Hey! That’s my picture!

After teaching my “all boy” class last night (that was fun!), I went into the kitchen and checked out the mail for the day. Right on top of the stack was the latest “Yoga Samachar” a publication sent out by IYNAUS “Iyengar Yoga National Association of the US.” On the cover was a photo I took at the Institute when I was in India.

When I was there, a friend of mine who works on the publication asked if I would take a specific picture for him of the place outside the door where everyone leaves their shoes before entering the Institute. He told me he wanted it for the cover of the publication. So, I asked permission from the Institute first, then took several photos and sent them to him. Below is a photo of the cover of the publication.

Since I’m “talking” about the Institute, the next picture is one my teacher (Gloria Goldberg) sent to me this morning. She’s been gone about 5 weeks. First in India celebrating Guruji’s 95th birthday, then she went to China to teach workshops, and now she’s back in India studying with the Iyengars.

This is a form of supported backbend in the tressler. Did I mention she’s 70 years old?

And while I’m mentioning my teacher, here’s a picture of her in China teaching a teacher training class. She is the person standing most to the right. I think the other person standing is probably an interpreter.

But let’s not forget the little ones. Bruce babysat Alo yesterday and seemed to have everything under control when I got home from work.

Corporate Yoga

I teach yoga at lunchtime every Tuesday at work. We normally practice in a conference room, but the room was unavailable yesterday, so we had to use someone’s office. Here’s what it looks like …
