Another Low Tide
Boxing at the OB Street Fair
This is the best thing that’s happened to the OB Street Fair – a local SD boxing event. When I arrived with one of my students, Chris, Ron & Bruce had a ringside table. We arrived just in time to see one of our local bums (who we see around …) standing in the middle of the ring with a microphone in his hand. I wondered… “what the heck is he doing in the middle of the ring with a microphone in his hand????” Shortly thereafter he announced he was going to sing the National Anthem. Yikes, I thought. Then he began singing. Oh wow. Although he didn’t really get all the words right (who ever does?), it was fantastic. Really. I was stunned. Then, the boxing began. There were 3 matches. The older boys (16, I think) boxed three 3-minute rounds. The younger boys (12 yrs old) boxed three 2-minute rounds. These boys were disciplined, in shape, focused, and respectful. All the boys were light on their feet and fast, respecting the rules, their coaches, the referee and each other. I took a couple pictures, but the one that follows is the only picture that didn’t turn out blurry – I told you they were fast on their feet…
